Security cameras have been set up in my community to spy on the teens. invasion of privacy?

Share

Dear anyone with experience in law, human rights, or law enforcement:

i live at in a gated community/country club in the Midwest (please dont judge), and i am 18. i have been arrested/convicted zero times, and have recieved one warning ticket from a police officer. bona fide student, bla bla bla…

the friendly local police force has recently deemed the teenage population of the community to be out of control. they have since hired one more on-duty officer and another on-duty "security" officer.

the police have a bottomless budget. we now have 2 24/7 on duty officers and 3 part-time "security officers". the police, i will say, are appropriate i suppose. but i swear if you step out of your house, and are between 15-20, you will be followed until you reach your destination, and then watched at a distance for a good half hour before the security guards move on.

but what really ruffles my feathers is that the other day i was on my boat with some friends, just coasting along the shore line of the lake. i am surprised to hear one of my friends say, "holy sh*t, is that a camera?" it was. brand new, wireless Cisco inter-community security monitoring system. we have since found at least 5 more in the woods, and there are bound to be more.

they did all of this without consulting city council. or maybe they did, but never informed the community. i just turned around one day to see that i was being filmed.

so basically i want to know, isn’t this a gross invasion of my privacy? either the being hounded and stalked by the "security" guards on the community’s payroll, or the several dozen security cameras scattered throughout various community hotspots, forests, and street corners. HOW ILLEGAL IS THIS?? and can my family and the family of my friends take action to make sure our every movement is not being watched by big brother?

thank you and have a nice day!!

Once you are outside of your house, there is no expectation of privacy so having cameras is perfectly legal. It sounds like your beef is more with the homeowners association. You think they are wasting money…which may be true. That’s a matter that needs to be brought up at a homeowners/board meeting. The owner of the house you live in has to make the complaint on expenditures. But the cameras per se, are legal.
