Can airport security X-ray machines damage digital camera or memory card images? Should precautions be taken?

Everyone knows that airport security X-ray machines can damage photography film images and cassette tapes if a person has to go through several checkpoints on a flight, but do they damage the data recorded on flash memory cards like those used in digital cameras? Should removable cards be removed from the camera before sending it through the X-ray machines? (I’m looking for knowledge, not guesswork.)
