I would just be careful about where they point. You don’t want to be accused of spying on your neighbors just because you are protecting your property. Don’t have them aimed at any open windows or anything or get your neighbors permission if you want to aim the cameras at the streets where their homes might be inview. Your neighbors might even be glad you are taking those steps to protect your home. Keep in mind, you cannot legally allow those cameras to record sounds, only video. Unless you warn the criminals that they "may be subject to audio recording during this criminal act".

I’d be very careful about believing the advice that you get on Yahoo. You probably don’t need a permit any more than I need a permit to keep a 10.1 EOS camera in my house but by pointing it the wrong way you could have the police at your door.
