   Why not Call or visit your local Police station and ask if there is anything you need to do , I do believe in some cases you need to put a sign but not always, you need to be fully protected, nowdays criminals have more rights then the victims

   Definitely install a camera, or two. It’s not very difficult. You can purchase a DVR card for your computer that will work as the surveillance system. They usually come with a Windows based program and can be purchased for as little as $10 on ebay. If you are a really good with computers and know Linux, then I would suggest using a very powerful program known as Zoneminder(requires the use of a Linux compatible DVR card or webcam). After using both Windows and Linux based surveillance programs, I definitely prefer Linux and trust it to run my surveillance server.

   You pretty much have 2 choices for running the wire to your camera. You can use coax, or you can use cat5 phone wire(requires the use of a balun on both ends). I prefer the cat5 because you have 4 pairs of wire, which can be used to bring power and the video feed to 2 cameras. The cat5 is also less bulky and easier to conceal.

   For the cameras, there are 2 different types of sensor technology to choose. There are CMOS and CCD. CMOS is better for low light when using night vision. CCD works better in light and offers a better quality picture. You should also pick a camera that has a larger chip, such as 1/3 instead of 1/4. You will get a higher resolution with a larger chip.
