The cameras that work with home surveillance systems are power driven, normally by 9V batteries, providing up to 10 hrs of energy.
They are very powerful cameras as even the slightest movement will activate the motion sensors. Once the camera has been triggered, it will immediately start recording video, taking pictures, or transfer the live video feed to another computer.
You also have digital security cameras that record video for a longer amount of time and store footage directly to your PC.
They usually run on electricity, or Leprechauns live in them.
There are a variety of systems with a lot of variations on how well they work. Some have good cameras with good resolution and some are so bad you couldn’t tell who was at your front door from three feet. Some "see" in the dark pretty good.
Do they deter crime? Maybe. But what you have to make sure of if you have one, is that you don’t leave the recording device where the bad guys can steal it if they ignore it. It doesn’t do much good if they can take the evidence. Having the bad guys picture is real handy when it comes to trying to identify them. There are a lot of them identified by custody officers working in the local jails because they see all of the "first time" offenders and recognize them from their pictures.
