Depends on your budget and needs. Do you need IR for night vision or are you going to use a motion light to illuminate areas at night (preferred method). Do you need a recording device to store the video footage or are you going to use your existing computer? Do you want remote access via the internet to view the cameras from a remote location (like when you are on vacation)? I have been selling and installing CCTV camera systems for over 10 years and always our preferred system is to use a DVR board with a dedicated computer running either Windows 2000 or XP using Weatherproof CCTV cameras with IR for outdoors and IR CCD Dome cameras for indoors or even hidden pinhole or hidden cameras in smoke detector or alarm motion sensors for covert video recording. Take a look at the first link below for an idea of what type of cameras and equipment are available. The website is for wholesale and CCTV companies only and is not available to the general public, but it will give you an idea of what CCTV installer use. The second link is for the DVR system we preferred to sell and install (best features, price, and ease of use).
Another option is to use Megapixel IP cameras that can stream the video to your existing pc. Megapixel IP cameras are the new force in the CCTV industry, but they are still somewhat expensive. The best thing about Megapixel IP cameras is the picture quality…..nothing comes close to these cameras in terms of picture quality, but then again you have to pay for that quality. Take a look at the last link below for more information on IP cameras. If you are interest in Megapixel IP camera, just use your favorite search engine like google or yahoo and type in "Megapixel IP cameras" for a list of available cameras.
