Would I be able to use a 1-Ch Mini Modulator with Comcast cable…?

Share

I want to broadcast my security cameras to all of my tv’s in my house. We have digital cable boxes on 3 tv’s and the other 3 tv’s are connected directly to the cable and only get up to channel 60.

This is the item I was going to purchase: http://www.smarthome.com/7764.html

Thanks.

From the set-up you describe, the three TV’s with digital boxes should be input into the AV jack on the TV, leaving the RF port open for the modulated signal. If these three don’t have an RF jack (typically labeled ‘antenna’), you won’t be able to do it without a whole lot of expensive gear. The other 3 TV’s have the cable plugging straight into the RF port, so you would need a combiner to add the additional channel. I’ve never tried to combine cable with CCTV in a single combiner, so I’m not sure it would work. The cable signal may carry signal at all the frequencies, which could cause signal interference between your CCTV and the cable signal. I would guess you could ask a technician or engineer at your cable provider what the RF set-up is on your cable. If they don’t use certain channels, you should be able to pick one of them for your own input. You would need a distribution amplifier/splitter regardless, if you wanted to get your modulator signal to all the TV’s. It would give you multiple RF outputs to go to the different TV’s.
The easiest way, if cable has the empty channels, would be to get the modulator. Run your security cam into it. The output from the modulator goes into the combiner. The cable output also goes into the combiner. The output from the combiner goes to a distribution amplifier/splitter. You can also find combination combiner/distribution amps (or combiner/splitter). The outputs from the DA/splitter go to each of your TV’s RF input jacks. This would keep cable and add the cameras to the non-digital sets. You then select the normal channel input on the TV’s with digital cable and go to the channels you selected for modulation to view the cameras. Of course, you would need more than one modulator if you want to insert more than one camera signal into the RF band. It sounds complicated, but it’s not that hard. The down side is that you would need somewhere to put all this equipment, and it will probably be a bit more expensive than you hoped. Hope this helps.
